Western Larch: A Promising Alternative to Siberian Larch

April 10, 2023

Western Larch is gaining attention as a reliable and cost-effective building material that possesses similar characteristics to Siberian Larch. As we witness changes in the external environment, we need a sturdy source of building materials that can withstand different weather conditions. Western Larch’s high durability and resistance to decay and rot make it an excellent choice for construction projects requiring long-term structural stability.

Larch is a very strong and durable wood, comparable in strength to solid wood. In its natural form, Larch has a very high resin content, which makes the wood as strong as material impregnated with wood preservatives. Larch has a dense wood structure, up to 40% denser than spruce or pine. Larch is weatherproof and can be installed outdoors in its natural form. Larch is highly valued by those who prefer a long-lasting solution, and the limited need for maintenance is a big bonus.

Over the last decades, we have mainly used Siberian Larch, but as the external environment changes, we want to offer Western Larch as an alternative. We are committed to providing our customers with the highest quality building materials. We believe that Western Larch is a superior choice when it comes to building with Larch wood.

Western Larch mostly grows in the centre part of the Rocky Mountains, typically found in British Columbia (Canada), Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon state areas (USA).

In terms of physical characteristics, Western Larch heartwood has a reddish-brown colour, while the sapwood has a yellowish-white to yellowish-brown colour. On the other hand, Siberian Larch heartwood has a yellowish-brown colour.

Despite its strength, Siberian Larch is not necessarily a more durable option than Western Larch. Both species are naturally resistant to decay and rot. According to the Estonian Centre for Standardisation and Accreditation laboratory test results, both species’ heartwood durability against fungi is moderately durable. In the same criteria, Nordic Spruce’s durability is slightly durable to not durable.

In conclusion, Western Larch is a superior choice when it comes to building with Larch wood. It is readily available, durable, and has a stable moisture content. As a company, we are proud to offer our customers the best quality building materials, and we believe that Western Larch is the right choice for any construction project.

Western larch has a light reddish-brown color and tends to have a straight, uniform grain pattern. Siberian larch, on the other hand, has a yellowish-brown color and often has a more irregular, wavy grain pattern.
